What are Varicose or Spider Veins?

Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged superficial (close to the surface of the body) veins usually seen in the thigh and leg. However, they can also develop deep under your skin where you are not able to see them. Spider veins are very small varicose veins. Both the conditions may cause aching, tired and swollen legs; create a burning, or itching sensation, muscle cramps and general restlessness in the legs. Both the conditions require medical treatment.

What causes Varicose or Spider Veins?

Varicose or Spider veins happen when small valves in veins break and cause the blood in the wrong direction. There are valves in the veins which prevent the back flow of blood into the legs. When these valves become damaged or defective, the blood flows backwards and causes swelling of the veins.
